When you rent a dumpster in the winter, you want to make sure you get the most of your dumpster. You don't want the weather to impact the functionality you will get from your dumpster rental.
1. Order Pick-Up & Drop-Off Around Winter Weather Events
Pay attention to the weather when you rent a dumpster in the winter. If you see that a blizzard is projected to hit on Wednesday, you probably don't want to schedule your dumpster drop-off for Wednesday or Thursday; you want to schedule your dumpster drop-off for Tuesday.
Pay attention to the weather when scheduling drop-off and pick-up times and try to avoid times when there will be a lot of snow on the ground. If there is a lot of snow on the ground, the dumpster pick-up or drop-off may be delayed. If the dumpster pick-up or drop-off is not delayed, it will be your responsibility to clean all the snow, so the garbage company has a clear space to set-up the dumpster. With a pick-up, it will be your responsibility to clear all the snow so the dumpster company can access and remove the dumpster.
2. Protect the Dumpster With a Lid or Tarp
Next, you are going to want to protect the dumpster. You don't want the dumpster to fill up with snow or water. When the dumpster is full of snow and water, you will not have as much space for your items inside of the dumpster. You want to keep snow and water out of your dumpster as much as you can. Most dumpsters come with a lid. If your dumpster comes with a lid, make sure to keep the lid closed except for when you are putting items into the dumpster.
If the dumpster doesn't come with a lid, get a tarp and some bungee cords. Put the tarp over the top of the dumpster and secure the tarp in place with the bungee cords. There should be eyelets on the tarp where you can secure one end of the bungee cord, and you should be able to secure the other end to handles on the dumpster.
3. Plow & Clear the Snow Around the Dumpster
Finally, even once the dumpster is delivered, you are still going to want to keep the snow away from the dumpster. You don't want the snow to pile up around the dumpster; if that happens, you will not be able to easily access the dumpster and put your trash inside of the dumpster. While the dumpster is on your property, be sure to plow and clear the snow around the dumpster to give you the best access possible to the dumpster.
When you rent a dumpster in the winter, you need to be aware of the weather when it comes to choosing drop-off and pick-up times. You need to use a tarp or the lid to keep water and snow out of the dumpster. Be sure to clear the snow around the dumpster so you can easily access it as well.
