Roofs are generally strong, quality-made structures that last for many years. However, even the best-made roofs can't and won't last forever. As such, it's important to be aware of the warning signs that indicate a failing roof. That way, you can take care of the problem before your whole roof is ruined, or, if the roof is already done for, before it caves in or causes structural damage to your home. Roofs that are supported by strong, sturdy trusses are less likely to have problems than roofs that aren't, but any type of roof can fail, so you'll always want to be watchful for these signs.
Sign #1: You Can See the Sun
While it's nice to have a little sunlight in your home, you don't want that sunlight to come in through your roof! Your roof's job is to seal your home off from and protect it from the outside world.
Thus, if you can see sunlight peeking through the slats of your roof, that's a good sign that it's grown weak and needs to be replaced!
Sign #2: Curling Shingles
Another sign to look out for is shingles that curl upwards on the sides. If you let this problem go on too long, the shingles will eventually curl all the way up and pop off or crack. And the bad news is that if curling is happening to one shingle, it's probably only a matter of time before it happens to the rest.
There is a positive side, however. If you catch this shingle problem early on, you may be able to get away with replacing just the shingles and not the entire roof! If you don't take care of it right away, however, you'll leave your roof weak and vulnerable and open it up to further problems.
Sign #3: Moss or Plant Growth
Unless you've experienced this problem yourself, it might sound kind of crazy, but believe it or not, some roofs will actually start to sprout moss, ivy, or other plant life if the conditions are right. Roofs that have little sunlight exposure, for example, commonly sprout moss.
The problem is that plants and growth can weigh down a roof and damage it beyond repair, so you'll definitely want to seek professional help for anything that's growing on your roof's surface.
If you do end up having to replace your roof because of one of these or any other problems, then inquire about having roof trusses, which can increase roof strength and durability, used in the process. You'll be glad you did!
